Fried Green Tomatoes - Dairy
Prep time: 10 minutes - Cooking time 0 minutes
Serves 4
Recipe Ingredients:
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 2/3 cup cornmeal
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 6 - 8 green tomatoes

Combine the self-rising flour and cornmeal in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Place the beaten egg and buttermilk in a separate bowl and whisk to combine.

Cut the tomatoes in 1/2 slices. Dip the tomato slices into the egg and buttermilk mixture, then toss in the flour mixture to coat. Shake off any excess flour.

Heat 3/4 inch oil in large heavy-based frying pan. Cook the tomatoes in batches over high heat until crisp and golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.

Note: Stand the cooked tomatoes upright to prevent them from going soggy. Do not overcrowd the pan, or the temperature will drop and the tomatoes will absorb the oil.
