Jewish Recipes --> Recipes --> Hanukkah Recipes --> Gelt

Here’s how you can make your own Hanukkah Gelt.
You will need the following: a double boiler, measuring spoons and cups, a cookie sheet, wax paper, a spatula, and Cookie- Cutters or the top of a spice jar.
  • 1 lb. confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 lb. piece of chocolate
  • ½ cup cocoa
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 6 Tbsps. butter or margarine
  • 4 Tbsps. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Combine ingredients in the double boiler. Place over simmering water and stir until smooth.

Quickly spread the melted chocolate into a buttered or wax-paper-lined cookie sheet.

    Let cool.

Using a plastic lid or the top of a spice jar, cut circles out of the chocolate. Lift the circles out with a metal spatula. Wrap each circle in colored foil to resemble coins.

    Store in the refrigerator.

Makes about 1 dozen, depending on the size.
